U Lun Gywe

U Lun Gywe was born in 1930 and is one of the most well known and well respected artists in Burma today and is considered probably the greatest living master of Burmese painting.  He graduated from the Art Institute of Teacher's Training and continued his studies under famous artists such as U Thet Win, U Chit Maung, U San Win, U Thein Han and U Ngwe Gaing. "I paint according to my emotions", says the artist, "drawing inspiration from smell and textures, light and shadow". At the centre of U Lun Gywe’s oeuvre is a focus on the female form, and in particular the beauty of females dancing, taking a bath or preparing their traditional Burmese thanaka makeup.  Although U Lun Gywe paints other subject matters, he always returns to his favourite subject with a vision of female beauty.  A series of drawings and paintings of nudes is included in the current exhibition. He exhibits regularly in Burma and has participated in several art exhibitions abroad, such as in Japan (1985), Korea (1989), Australia (1990, 1991, 1992), USA (New York, 1990, 2006), Singapore (1995, 2004, 2006), and Thailand (2004, 2005, 2007).  His works are found in the public collections of the National Museum of Myanmar [Burma] and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.
