죽기 전에 꼭 들어야 할 팝송 11 - Gorillaz & D12의 '911'

'911'은 영국의 버츄얼 밴드(virtual band, 사이버 밴드) 고릴라즈(Gorillaz)와 미국 힙합 그룹 D12가 부른 노래이다. 스카 리바이벌 밴드인 더 스페셜스(The Specials)의 멤버 테리 홀(Terry Hall)이 객원 보컬로 참여했다. '911'은 2001년 뉴욕 테러 직후 웨스트 런던 소재 영국 록 밴드 블러(Blur)의 리드 보컬 데이먼 알반(Damon Albarn) 소유 개인 스튜디오에서 취입했다. D12는 9.11 뉴욕 테러 이후 영국에서 좌초되었다.

데이먼 알반의 스튜디오에 초대받은 D12는 '911' 트랙의 초기 데모를 연주했다. 알반은 중동 음악( Middle-Eastern music)을 실험하고 싶었고, 이 노래가 안성맞춤이라고 생각했다. D12는 곡에 테리 홀의 코러스와 데이먼 알반의 보컬을 추가했다. 알반은 홀이 중동 출신 가수로부터 노래 수업을 받고 있다고 밝혔을 때, 이 노래를 다른 방향으로 가져가도록 영감을 주었다.

'911' 녹음 작업에는 고릴라즈, 테리 홀, 미스터 포터(Mr. Porter), 폰 칼라일 큐니바(Von Carlisle Kuniva), 온드레 무어(Ondre Moore), 비자르(Bizarre), 프루프(Proof) 등이 보컬로 참여했다. 포터와 큐니바, 비자르, 프루프는 D12 멤버다. 뮤직 비디오는 고릴라즈의 노래 'Clint Eastwood'(클린트 이스트우드), '19-2000'과 동일한 영상을 제공하지만 배경은 다르다. 트랙에는 D12가 카메라를 향해 달리는 장면이 있다. 테리 홀은 뮤직 비디오에 나타나지 않는다.
