'1979'는 미국의 얼터너티브 록 밴드 스매싱 펌킨스(The Smashing Pumpkins)가 부른 노래다. 이 노래는 1996년 밴드의 세 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'(멜론 콜리 앤드 디 인피너트 새드니스)에서 두 번째 싱글로 커트되어 발매되었다.

'1979'는 스매싱 펌킨스의 프론트맨인 빌리 코건(Billy Corgan)이 작곡했다. 1979년에 12살이었던 코건은 이제 막 청소년기에 들어서고 있었다. 가사는 그 시절의 향수를 노래하고 있다.

'1979는 메인스트림 록 트랙스(Mainstream Rock Tracks) 및 모던 록 트랙스(Modern Rock Tracks) 차트에서 1 위를 차지했다. 캐나다와 아이슬란드 차트에서는 2위, 아일랜드 차트에서는 6위, 뉴질랜드 차트에서는 9위에 올랐다. 미국 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서는 12위를 차지했다. 그 외 영국이나 호주 등 다른 여러 나라의 차트에서도 20위권 안에 들었다. 이 노래는 '1996년 올해의 음반' 후보에 올랐으며, 제39회 그래미 어워드에서 듀오 및 그룹 부문 최우수 록 후보로 지명되었다. MTV 비디오 뮤직 어워드에서는 최우수 얼터너티브 비디오 부문상을 수상했다. 2012년에는 롤링 스톤 잡지 독자들의 투표에 의해 스매싱 펌킨스의 노래 중 두 번째 최애곡으로 선정되었다.
