'Breakdown'(브레이크다운)은 1997년 발매된 미국 가수이자 작곡가인 머라이어 캐리(Mariah Carey)의 6집 앨범 'Butterfly'(버터플라이) (1997) 6번 트랙에 수록된 곡이다. 이 노래에는 미국 힙합 그룹 본 석스-앤-하모니(Bone Thugs-n-Harmony)의 다섯 멤버 중 크레이지 본(Krayzie Bone)과 위시 본(Wish Bone) 두 사람의 랩 구절이 포함되어 있다.

노래 가사는 일견 사랑하는 연인이 갑자기 이별을 선언하고 떠날 때 느끼는 감정과 그로 인한 고통을 묘사하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 앨범 'Butterfly'가 파경을 맞은 토미 모톨라(Thomas Mottola)와의 결혼 생활에 대한 머라이어 캐리의 진심 어린 심경을 담고 있으니 말이다. 하지만 캐리는 이 노래에 대해 '끝을 모르고 계속 일에 전념하다가 금방이라도 쓰러질 것만 같은 상태도 깨닫지 못한 그런 상황에서 탄생했다'고 말한 바 있다. 'Breakdown'은 결국 너무나 혹사를 당해 기진맥진한 심적 상태에서 벗어나려는 캐리의 몸부림이었던 것이다.

'Breakdown'은 1998년 3월 22일 앨범에서 4번째 싱글로 커트되어 발매되었다. 이 싱글은 당시 소니와의 분쟁으로 'Butterfly'에서 3번째로 커트되어 나온 싱글 'The Roof'(더 루프)와 함께 전 세계에 제한적으로 출시되었다. 이 싱글은 한정 발매로 인해 미국과 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드를 제외한 대부분의 주요 음악 시장에서 차트에 포함되지도 못했다. 호주 차트에서는 38위, 뉴질랜드 차트에서는 4위를 기록했다. 미국에서는 당시 빌보드 규칙으로 인해 핫 100 차트를 작성하지 못했다. 하지만 핫 100 방송(Airplay) 차트에서는 53위에 올랐다.

'Breakdown' 뮤직 비디오에서 머라이어 캐리는 컬러풀하면서도 다양한 의상과 어울리는 메이크업을 선보인다. 캐리는 플라멩코 스타일의 옷을 입고 다른 두 명의 여성 댄서와 함께 의자에서 춤을 추는 카바레 소녀 역을 맡았다. 또, 다른 장면에서 캐리는 마술사 레드맨(Redman)의 조수를 연기한다. 카지노 장면에서 캐리는 메인 카지노 홀 테이블에 앉아 많은 사람들과 도박을 하는 본 석스-앤-하모니 멤버들을 응원하는 연기를 한다.
