죽기 전에 꼭 들어야 할 팝송 127 - Genesis의 'The Carpet Crawlers'

'The Carpet Crawlers'(더 카핏 크롤러스)는 1974년 11월 18일 발매된 영국의 프로그레시브 록 밴드 제너시스(Genesis)의 6번째 스튜디오 더블 앨범 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'(더 램 라이즈 다운 온 브로드웨이)의 2면 4번 트랙 수록곡이다. 제너시스 원년 멤버이자 베이시스트 겸 기타리스트 마이크 러더퍼드(Mike Rutherford)와 키보디스트 토니 뱅크스(Tony Banks)는 리드 싱어 피터 게이브리얼(Peter Gabriel)의 도움을 받아 이 노래를 작곡했다.

'The Carpet Crawlers'는 1975년 4월 앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 커트되어 발매되었다. 1995년 제너시스는 이 노래를 게이브리얼과 드러머 필 콜린스(Phil Collins)가 리드 보컬을 공유하는 버전으로 다시 녹음하여 'The Carpet Crawlers 1999'라는 곡목으로 발매했다. 게이브리얼은 1975년에 밴드를 떠났고, 콜린스는 1996년에 그만두었기 때문에 'The Carpet Crawlers 1999'는 두 사람이 제너시스와 함께 마지막으로 취입한 음반이 되었다.

'The Carpet Crawlers'는 브롱스 게토에 사는 푸에르토리코인 주인공 래얼(Rael)의 이야기이다. 이 곡은 게이브리얼의 '펑크 순례자의 길' 장면에서 등장한다. 래얼은 빨간 카핏이 깔린 복도을 가득 메운 사람들을 보게 되고, 이들은 무릎을 꿇은 채 복도 끝의 방을 향해 기어간다. 래얼은 그들을 지나쳐 문을 향해 돌진해서 통과한다. 문 뒤에는 촛불이 켜진 테이블이 있고, 또 그 뒤에는 위로 올라가는 나선형 계단이 있다.

반복적인 가사 'you’ve got to get in to get out(빠져나가기 위해서는 들어가야만 해)' 구절은 난자 수정을 위해 전진하는 정자를 상징한다는 설도 제기되었다. 문을 향해서 움직이는 행렬이 난자를 향해 돌진하는 정자를 상징하든 아니든 그 해석은 각자의 몫이 되겠다.

제너시스가 낳은 가장 불가해한 앨범의 하이라이트를 장식한 'The Carpet Crawlers'는 밴드의 열정과 절제가 돋보이는 곡이다. 프로그레시브 록을 싫어하는 사람들도 한번쯤 들어볼 만한 연주다. 게이브리얼이 만들어낸 최고의 멜로디 가운데 하나이기 때문이다.

There is lambswool under my naked feet. The wool is soft and warm, gives off some kind of heat. A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed. Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid. The fleas cling to the golden fleece, Hoping they'll find peace. Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid. There's no hiding in my memory. There's no room to avoid.

 

The walls are painted in red ochre and are marked by strange insignia, some looking like a bulls-eye, others of birds and boats. Further down the corridor, he can see some people; all kneeling. With broken sighs and murmurs they struggle, in their slow motion to move towards a wooden door at the end. Having seen only the inanimate bodies in the Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging, Rael rushes to talk to them.

 

The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor. For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door, Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out."

 

"What's going on?" he cries to a muttering monk, who conceals a yawn and replies "It's a long time yet before the dawn." A sphinx-like crawler calls his name saying "Don't ask him, the monk is drunk. Each one of us is trying to reach the top of the stairs, a way out will await us there." Not asking how he can move freely, our hero goes boldly through the door. Behind a table loaded with food, is a spiral staircase going up into the ceiling.

 

There's only one direction in the faces that I see; It's upward to the ceiling, where the chamber's said to be. Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree. They are pulled up by the magnet, believing they're free. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out."

 

Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite, And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing

bright. Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight; It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out."

 

The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack. The eager pack lift up their pitchers - they carry all they lack. The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack, And the tickler takes his stickleback. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out."
