'Fast Car'(패스트 카)는 그래미 어워드 4회 수상에 빛나는 미국의 싱어송라이터 트레이시 채프먼(Tracy Chapman)의 노래다. 이 노래는 1988년 4월 6일 채프먼의 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 스튜디오 앨범의 리드 싱글로 커트되어 발매되었다.
'Fast Car'는 빈곤의 악순환에서 탈출하기 위해 열심히 일하는 가난한 여성 노동자의 소름끼칠 정도로 현실적인 이야기를 담고 있다. 그러나 주인공은 가난, 알코올 중독, 가정폭력이라는 현실을 극복하고자 하는 의지를 가지고 있다. 그런 의미에서 이 노래는 고통스런 현실을 극복하고 미래를 낙관적 의지로 바라보는 포크 록 서사시라고 할 수 있다.
1988년 영국 웸블리 스타디움에서 넬슨 만델라 헌정공연(Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute)이 열렸다. 트레이시 채프먼은 원래 이 공연에서 세 곡을 부를 예정이었다. 그러나, 깜짝 게스트인 스티비 원더(Stevie Wonder)가 무대에 오르기 직전 키보드 하드 디스크가 사라진 사실을 알게 되었다. 원더는 패닉 상태로 웸블리 스타디움을 떠났고, 주최측은 채프먼을 다시 무대로 오르게 했다. 주최측이 다음 무대를 준비하는 동안 채프먼은 'Fast Car'와 'Across the Lines'(어크로스 더 라인즈)를 불렀다.
앨범 'Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute'(넬슨 만델라 세븐티쓰 버쓰데이 트리뷰트)는 1988년 8월 27일 빌보드 200 차트에서 1위를 차지했다. 이 앨범에 힘입어 'Fast Car'는 미국 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 6위에 올랐다. 영국 싱글 차트에서는 4위를 기록했다. 이 싱글은 2014년 영국음반산업협회(BPI)로부터 플래티넘 인증을 받았다. 2016년 기준 이 싱글은 영국에서 661,500장의 판매고를 올렸다.
'Fast Car'는 '올해의 레코드', '올해 의 노래', '최우수 여성 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스' 등 3개의 그래미상을 수상했다. 또한 1989년에는 MTV 비디오 뮤직 어워드 최우수 여성 비디오 부문상을 받았다. 롤링 스톤(Rolling Stone)은 'Fast Car'를 '역사상 가장 위대한 노래 500곡' 목록에서 167위로 선정했다. 롤링 스톤이 2021년 목록을 업데이트했을 때'이 노래는 71위까지 올라갔다. 피치포크(Pitchfork)는 이 곡을 '1980년대 최고의 노래' 목록에서 86위로 선정했다.
