'Babylon’s Burning'(배벌런스 버닝)은 1979년 9월 발매되어 영국 앨범 차트에서 16위에 오른 펑크 록 밴드 러츠(The Ruts)의 데뷔 음반 'The Crack'(더 크랙)의 오프닝 트랙이다. 싱글 'Babylon's Burning'과 'Something That I Said'(썸씽 댓 아이 세드)는 재녹음 작업을 거쳐서 앨범에 수록되었다.

음반 녹음 작업에는 보컬리스트 맬컴 오웬(Malcolm Owen)과 기타리스트 폴 폭스(Paul Fox), 드러머 데이빗 러피(David Ruffy), 베이시스트 존 '섹스' 제닝스(John 'Segs' Jennings) 등이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 이들은 재즈-펑크(funk) 커버 전문 밴드 히트 앤 런(Hit and Run)에서 활동한 베테랑들이었다.

싱글 'Babylon’s Burning'은 1979년 보수당 대처 정권의 경제, 교육, 보건, 주택공급 등의 민영화에 저항하는 여름 폭동이 영국을 휩쓸던 당시의 분위기를 포착했다. 가사에는 서구 문명이 불타면서 붕괴한다는 메시지가 담겨 있다. 러츠는 반인종주의 운동에 참여했으며, 사우스얼(Southall) 출신의 리드 싱어 말콤 오웬은 특히 1979년 4월 고향에서 일어난 인종 폭동의 영향을 크게 받았다. 앨범의 또 다른 곡 'Jah War'(자 워)도 폭동에 관한 노래다.

'Babylon’s Burning'은 1930년대에 자메이카에서 시작된 신흥 종교 라스타파리 운동과 관련된 천년왕국설을 부르짖는다. 밥 말리(Bob Marley)나 맥스 로미오(Max Romeo)도 다룬 바 있는 천년왕국설은 그리스도가 최후의 심판 이전에 재림하여 1,000년 동안 황금기나 낙원이 지상에 올 것이라고 하는 믿음이다. 그래서 이 곡에는 천지개벽을 연상케 하는 묵시록적 사이렌과 알람 소리를 동반한 불타오르는 듯한 기타 연주가 작렬한다.

'Babylon’s Burning'은 1980년 영화 'Times Square'(타임즈 스퀘어) 사운드트랙에 삽입되었다. 이 노래는 러츠의 가장 큰 히트곡이었다. 하지만 밴드는 1980년 7월 14일 헤로인 과다 복용으로 말콤 오웬이 사망하면서 전성기 시절을 결코 회복되지 못했다.
