'Bat Out of Hell'(뱃 아웃 오브 헬, 지옥을 나온 박쥐, 9:51)은 텍사스 출신의 배우이자, 오페라 보컬의 소유자 미국의 록 싱어 미트 로프(Meat Loaf, 본명 마빈 리 앤디)가 1977년 10월 21일 클리블랜드 인터내셔널/에픽 레코드(Cleveland International/Epic Records)를 통해서 발매한 데뷔 스튜디오 앨범의 타이틀 곡이다. 이 곡은 미트 로프와 뉴욕 출신의 친구이자 작곡가 짐 스타인먼(Jim Steinman), 프로듀서 토드 런그렌(Todd Rundgren)의 첫 콜라보 작품이기도 하다. 전설적인 록 뮤지션과 초현실적인 작곡가. 프로듀서가 만나 이 명곡이 탄생했다. 미트 로프는 이름 그대로 살집이 많은 거구다.

앨범 'Bat Out of Hell'의 음악적 스타일은 리처드 바그너(Richard Wagner), 필 스펙터(Phil Spector), 브루스 스프링틴(Bruce Springsteen), 더 후(The Who)를 잘 이해한 스타인먼의 영향이 컸다. 'Bat Out of Hell'로부터 'Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell'과 'Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose' 등 두 개의 속편이 나왔다.

앨범 'Bat Out of Hell'은 시대를 초월해서 가장 잘 팔리는 앨범 가운데 하나이다. 이 앨범은 세계적으로 4,300만 장 이상의 판매고를 올려 미국 음반산업협회(RIAA)로부터 14x 플래티넘 인증을 받았다. 2019년 6월까지 앨범 'Bat Out of Hell'은 영국 앨범 차트에서 522주 동안 진입해 있었다. 영국 차트에서 한번도 정상에 오르지는 못했지만, 진입과 탈락을 거듭하면서 거의 10년 가까이 차트에 머문 셈이다. 이는 스튜디오 앨범으로서는 두 번째로 긴 기록이었다. 이 앨범은 시대를 초월해서 가장 영향력이 큰 앨범으로 인정을 받았다. 타이틀 곡 'Bat Out of Hell'은 1979년에 이어 1993년에도 싱글로 출시되었다. 앨범 수록곡 중에서 가장 인상적인 곡이다. 이 노래는 앨범의 다른 수록곡들과 마찬가지로 피터 팬(Peter Pan)과 네버랜드(Neverland)에 관한 이야기다. 가사는 실연당한 한 불운한 십대 소년의 이야기를 노래한다. 그는 오토바이를 과속으로 몰다가 사고로 죽음을 맞이한다.

'Bat Out of Hell'은 극적 효과를 극대화하기 위해 별개의 소악장으로 나뉘어진다. 기타 솔로가 울부짖고, 날렵한 손놀림으로 이루어진 피아노 리프가 이 곡의 오프닝에 시동을 건다. 이 곡은 풍성하고 장대한 리프로 인해 많은 평론가들이 헤비 메탈로 분류했다. 하지만 이 곡은 헤비 메탈이라기보다는 교향곡에 더 가깝다.
