'Box of Rain'(박스 오브 레인)은 미국 록 밴드 그레이트풀 데드(The Grateful Dead)가 1970년에 발매한 5번째 스튜디오 앨범 'American Beauty'(어메리칸 뷰티)의 오프닝 트랙 수록곡이다. 이 노래는 베이시스트 필 레쉬(Phil Lesh)가 작곡하고, 작사가이자 싱어송라이터 로버트 헌터(Robert Hunter)가 작사한 어쿠스틱 풍의 발라드다. 노래는 필 레쉬가 리드 보컬로 불렀다. 헌터는 이 노래 가사로 히피 전성기 시대 미국의 가장 위대한 작곡가 반열에 오르면서 전설이 되었다.

미국 록 밴드 그레이트풀 데드 

'Box of Rain'은 미국 민속 음악과 컨트리 음악의 전통에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다. 그레이트풀 데드의 노래들 대부분, 앨범 'American Beauty'의 노래 대부분, 1970년에 발매된 밴드의 4번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Workingman's Dead'(워킹맨스 데드) 수록곡들도 마찬가지다.

'Box of Rain'에는 두 명의 객원 뮤지션이 참여했다. 미국 컨트리 록 밴드 뉴 라이더스 오브 퍼플 세이지(New Riders of the Purple Sage)의 멤버 데이비드 넬슨(David Nelson)과 데이브 토버트(Dave Torbert)는 각각 리드 기타와 베이스 기타를 담당했다. 넬슨은 전통적인 벤딩 기술을 사용하여 펜더 텔레캐스터(Fender Telecaster)를 연주했다. 필 레쉬는 어쿠스틱 기타, 밴드의 리드 기타리스트이자 보컬리스트 제리 가르시아(Jerry Garcia)는 피아노를 연주했다. 밥 위어(Bob Weir)는 필 레쉬의 노래에 화음을 넣는다.

작사가 로버트 헌터의 말에 따르면, 필 레쉬는 'Box of Rain'이 말기 암으로 죽어가는 자신의 아버지를 위한 추모의 노래가 되기를 바랐다고 한다. 레쉬는 아버지가 말기 암으로 누워 있는 요양원으로 차를 운전하면서 이 노래를 부르곤 했다. 헌터는 'box of rain'이 우리가 살고 있는 세상을 의미한다고 말했다.

밴드의 대표곡 'Ripple'(리플, 잔물결)과 유사성을 띠고 있는 이 곡은 깊은 시적 감성을 담고 있다. 'moth before a flame'(불꽃 앞에 나방)이라는 가사는 속담 'the fate of the moth in the flame(불꽃 속 나방의 운명)'과 같은 의미다. 가사의 마지막에 나오는 'long long time to be gone and a short time to be there(오랜 시간이 지나고 거기에 있을 시간이 짧아)' 구절은 오래된 고전 'Little Birdie'(리틀 버디)의 가사 'I've a short while to be here, and a long time to be gone(나는 여기에 있을 시간이 얼마 없고, 이제 곧 영원히 사라질 거야)'라는 구절과 일맥상통한다.

'Box of Rain'이 전하는 메시지는 슬프면서도 감동적이다. 필 레쉬는 복받쳐 오르는 감정에 잔뜩 목이 멘 목소리로 노래를 부른다. 레쉬의 개인사가 반영된 이 노래의 배경을 아는 사람들은 듣기가 다소 힘들 수도 있다. 여담이지만, 필 레쉬의 목소리를 들어보면 그가 베이스 기타를 선택하기를 잘했다는 느낌이 든다. 보컬로는 성공하기 어려운 목소리다.
