'Common People'(커먼 피플)은 1995년 5월 발매된 영국의 얼터너티브 록 밴드 펄프(Pulp)의 다섯 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Different Class'(디퍼런트 클래스)에서 커트되어 나온 리드 싱글이다. 영국 싱글 차트에서 2위에 오른 이 노래는 이후 브릿팝 운동과 펄프의 시그니처 곡을 정의하는 트랙이 되었다. 2014년 BBC 라디오 6 뮤직 청취자들은 온라인 투표에서 이 노래를 최애 브릿팝으로 선정했다. 2015년 롤링 스톤 독자 투표에서는 가장 위대한 브릿팝 노래로 선정되는 등 성공 가도를 달렸다. 이 노래 하나로 코커는 4차원적 괴짜에서 영국의 국보급 팝스타로 부상했다.
'Common People'은 '일반인' 또는 '서민'이라는 뜻이다. 가사는 '서민처럼 되고 싶다'는 인식과 가난에 매력을 부여하는 이들을 비판하는 내용이다. 이러한 현상을 슬러밍(slumming) 또는 클래스 관광(class tourist)이라고 한다. 이 노래는 밴드 멤버인 프론트맨 자비스 코커(Jarvis Cocker), 드러머 닉 뱅크스(Nick Banks), 키보디스트 캔디다 도일(Candida Doyle), 베이시스트 스티브 맥키(Steve Mackey), 기타리스트 러셀 시니어(Russell Senior)가 공동으로 작곡했다. 코커는 런던의 센트럴 세인트 마틴스 예술디자인대학(Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design)에서 공부하는 동안 그리스에서 유학 온 미술 전공 여학생을 만난 후 이 노래를 구상했다.
'She came from Greece/She had a thirst for knowledge/She studied sculpture at St. Martin’s College(그녀는 그리스에서 왔지/지식에 목말라 있었어/그녀는 세인트 마틴스 컬리지의 조각 전공생이었어)'로 시작되는 'Common People'에 힘입어 펄프는 컬트 그룹에서 일약 주류로 올라서게 된다. 가사는 한 노동 계급 남자와 부유한 미대 여학생의 만남을 다루고 있다. 미대 여학생은 런던의 이스트 엔드 지역에서 노니는 것이 진정 멋진 것이라 여기는 인물이었다. 상류층 여성이 빈민 체험을 자청 싸구려 집에서 밑바닥 삶을 사는 것에 대한 어떤 환상을 가지고 있는 그런 인물 말이다.
Pulp - Common People (Glastonbury 1995)
공식 차트 컴퍼니(Official Charts Company)의 저스틴 마이어스(Justin Myers)는 'Common People'에 대해 "전형적인 펄프다운 노래다. 일반인들과 어울려 관광객처럼 거칠게 행동하는 상류층 사람들을 날카롭게 풍자한 노래다."라고 평했다. 펄프는 1994년 8월 리딩 페스티벌에서 이 노래를 처음 공연했다. 1년 후 밴드는 글래스톤베리 페스티벌 오프닝 무대에서 이 노래를 공연했다. 이 노래는 이후 다양한 아티스트들에 의해 커버되었다. 2004년 'Star Trek(스타 트랙)'의 고참병 윌리엄 샤트너(William Shatner)도 'Common People'을 커버했다. 샤트너의 커버 덕분에 이 곡은 영국 톱 10에 진입한 지 10년 후 차트를 역주행하는 일이 일어난다.
'Common People' 뮤직 비디오에는 배우 새디 프로스트(Sadie Frost)가 출연해서 코커와 즉흥적인 댄스 루틴을 선보인다. 뮤직 비디오는 또한 판타지 코미디 뮤지컬 애니메이션 영화 'Yellow Submarine'(옐로우 섭머린)의 '엘리노어 릭비(Eleanor Rigby)' 시퀀스에 대한 오마주를 담고 있으며, 일상적인 사람들은 1초도 안 되는 반복되는 루프에 갇혀 있다. 클럽 장면은 런던 이스트 엔드(East End of London) 커머셜 로드(Commercial Road) 소재 스테프니 나이트클럽(Stepney's Nightclub)에서 촬영되었다 . 이 나이트클럽은 1970년대 댄스 플로어를 포함하여 원래의 실내 장식을 그대로 유지했다. 2007년 철거 위협을 받았을 때 스테프니 나이트클럽은 문화적 아이콘으로 묘사되었다.
