'Dancing in the Street'(댄싱 인 더 스트리트)는 마빈 게이(Marvin Gaye), 윌리엄 '미키' 스티븐슨(William 'Mickey' Stevenson), 아이비 조 헌터(Ivy Jo Hunter)가 공동으로 작곡한 R&B, 노던 소울(Northern soul)이다. 이 노래는 1964년 마서 리브스(Martha Reeves)와 로잘린드 애쉬포드(Rosaland Ashford), 베티 켈리(Betty Kelley) 등 3명으로 구성된 미국 보컬 그룹 마서 & 더 밴덜러스(Martha and the Vandellas)가 싱글로 발매해서 처음 인기를 얻었다. 마서 & 더 밴덜러스 버전은 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 2위, 영국 싱글 차트에서는 4위에 올랐다.

'Dancing in the Street'는 모타운의 시그니처 곡이자 마서 & 더 밴덜러스의 시그니처 곡이기도 하다. 싱글 발매 당시 흑인 소유의 디트로이트 레이블 모타운은 창의성과 상업성 양면에서 전성기를 달리고 있었다. 하지만 디트로이트가 미 전역의 집중적인 관심의 중심으로 떠오른 것은 흑인과 백인 사이의 긴장감이 최고조에 이르렀을 때였다. 노래의 중반부쯤 마사 리브스는 'Can’t forget the Motor City(자동차의 도시를 잊을 수 없다)'라고 외친다. 자동차의 도시는 바로 디트로이트다.

'Dancing in the Street'는 모타운의 소울 미학을 가장 잘 담아낸 노래라는 평가를 받으면서 이후 많은 뮤지션들이 커버했다. 미국 포크 록 보컬 그룹 마마스 & 파파스(Mamas & Papas)가 1966년에 커버한 버전은 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 73위에 오르는 작은 히트를 기록했다. 1982년 미국 록 그룹 반 헤일런(Van Halen)이 커버한 버전은 빌보드 핫 100 차트 38위, 캐나다 RPM 차트 15위에 올랐다.

영국 싱어송라이터 데이비드 보위(David Bowie)와 롤링스톤스 프론트맨 믹 재거(Mick Jagger)의 1985년 듀엣 커버 버전은 영국 차트 1위, 미국 차트 7위에 올랐다. 이들 외에도 영국 록 밴드 킹크스(The Kinks), 스웨덴 팝 그룹 타게스(Tages), 미국 록 밴드 그레이트풀 데드(Grateful Dead), 미국 싱어송라이터 리틀 리처드(Little Richard), 멕시코계 미국 싱어 마이러(Myra), 영국 인디 록 밴드 스트러츠(The Struts) 등 많은 뮤지션들이 이 노래를 커버했다.

'Dancing in the Street' 가사는 듣는 사람이 사는 도시에 상관없이 즐거운 시간을 보내는 개념을 강조했다. 춤에 대한 아이디어는 열린 소화전에서 분수처럼 쏟아지는 물 속에 뛰어든 디트로이트 거리의 사람들이 여름 더위를 식히는 광경에서 영감을 얻었다. 스티븐슨에게 그 장면은 물 속에서 사람들이 마치 춤추는 것처럼 보였다.

1964년 7월 미 대통령 린든 존슨(Lyndon Johnson)이 인종 차별 철폐법인 공민권법에 서명할 당시에도 흑인과 백인의 격차는 여전했다. 공민권법이 발효됐음에도 백인 경찰들이 흑인 주민들을 무자비하게 다룬 사건으로 뉴욕의 할렘과 로체스터에서 폭동이 일어났다. 같은 달 발매된 'Dancing in the Street'는 인종 차별 철폐 같은 이슈에 불을 지피면서 흑인들에게 저항을 부추기는 듯한 노래로 들렸다.

미국 여러 도시에서 인종 차별 철폐와 인권 보장을 부르짖으며 폭동을 일으킨 많은 젊은 흑인 시위자들은 거리를 행진하며 'Dancing in the Street'를 불렀다. 당시 이 노래는 흑인들 사이에 저항가로 여겨졌다. 그래서 일부 라디오 방송국에서는 이 노래를 금지곡으로 선정했다. 소수 인종에게 영감을 주는 이 춤 운동으로 백인 지배 미국 사회의 일부에서 불안이 유발되었다. 

 

The Kinks - Dancing In the Street

 

'Dancing in the Street'를 통한 흑인들의 춤 운동은 1890년대 아메리카 원주민들의 종교적인 운동인 '고스트 댄스'를 연상케 했다. 북미 인디언들의 '고스트 댄스' 운동을 우려한 미국 정부는 제7기병대로 하여금 1890년 '운디드 니(Wounded Knee) 대학살'을 자행케 했다. 이 사건으로 여성과 어린이를 포함 라코타 수우(Lakota Sioux)족 200명 이상이 학살을 당했다. 미국 정부는 공식적으로 이 사건을 '운디드 니' 전투'라고 부른다. 수우족 1명이 손에서 칼을 놓지 않았다는 이유로 500명 이상의 미군 정규 기병대가 무차별 사격으로 자행한 대학살극인데 무슨 전투인가? 역사는 승리한 자들이 쓰는 것이란 말이 실감난다.  

 

리브스는 'Dancing in the Street'에 대해 흑인을 선동하려고 의도한 것이 아니라 단순히 파티에 초대하는 노래라고 주장했다. 리브스는 'All we need is music(우리에게 필요한 건 음악뿐)'이라고 외친다. 하지만, 미국의 아프리카계 민중은 'music'을 'revolution(혁명)' 또는 'resistance(저항)'으로 받아들였던 것이다.
