'The Dark End of the Street'(더 다크 엔드 오브 더 스트리트)는 작곡가 댄 펜(Dan Penn)과 칩스 모먼(Chips Moman)이 작곡하고, 1967년 알앤비 & 소울 싱어 제임스 카(James Carr)가 처음 취입한 소울 송이다. 펜은 전문 작곡가이자 프로듀서였고, 모먼은 로스앤젤레스의 골드 스타 스튜디오(Gold Star Studio) 세션 기타리스트이자 테네시 주 멤피스(Memphis)의 어메리칸 사운드 스튜디오(American Sound Studio) 소유주였다.

'The Dark End of the Street'는 내쉬빌에서 열린 음악 업계 관련자 컨벤션에서 벌어진 포커 게임 중 막간을 이용해 작곡되었다. 1966년 여름 멤피스에서 컨벤션이 열리는 동안 펜과 모먼은 플로리다 DJ 돈 슈뢰더(Don Schroeder)와 카드 게임을 하며 바람을 쐬고 쉬는 동안 곡을 쓰기로 결정했다. 이들은 배반에 관한 역대 최고의 노래를 만들기로 했다.

두 사람은 작곡을 위해 또 다른 머슬 숄즈(Muscle Shoals) 동창생이자 하이 레코즈의 설립자인 퀸턴 클론치(Quinton Claunch)의 호텔 방으로 갔다. 클론치는 노래를 제임스 카에게 주는 조건으로 협업을 수락했다. 클론치의 방에서 단 30분 만에 멜로디와 가사가 완성되었다.

약속대로 소울 아티스트 제임스 카는 1966년 말 'The Dark End of the Street'를 처음 취입했다. 녹음은 하이 레코즈(HI Records)의 본거지 로열 스튜디오스(Royal Studios)에서 이루어졌다. 이 노래는 빌보드 매거진의 블랙 싱글 차트 에서 10위에 올랐고, 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 77위에 오르는 등 카의 트레이드마크가 되었다.

6개월 후 소울 가수 퍼시 슬레지(Percy Sledge)는 자신의 1967년 앨범 'The Percy Sledge Way'(더 퍼시 슬레지 웨이)에 수록했다. 하지만 슬레지 버전은 높은 차트에는 오르지 못했다. 이 노래는 오늘날 서던 소울(Souther-soul) 고전의 하나로 인정받고 있다.
