'Alternative Ulster'(얼터너티브 얼스터)는 아일랜드 펑크 록 밴드 스티프 리틀 핑거스(Stiff Little Fingers)가 1991년에 발매한 라이브 앨범 'Alternative Chartbusters'(얼터너티브 차트버스터스)의 2번 트랙 수록곡이다. 이 노래는 북아일랜드를 강제 점령한 영국에 대한 저항가라고 할 수 있다. 작곡은 스티프 리틀 핑거스, 작사는 저널리스트 고든 오길비(Gordon Ogilvie)가 맡았다.

앨범 'Alternative Chartbusters'는 1988년 10월 1일 런던의 브릭스톤 어캐더미(Brixton Academy)에서 라이브로 녹음되었다. 공식 라인업은 제이크 번스(Jake Burns, 보컬, 기타), 돌핀 테일러(Dolphin Taylor, 드럼), 헨리 클루니(Henry Cluney, 기타), 알리 맥모디(Ali McMordie, 베이스) 등 4명이다.

스티프 리틀 핑거스의 프론트맨 제이크 번스는 북아일랜드인들이 독립을 위해 영국에 치열하게 저항하던 시기에 얼스터에서 성장기를 보냈다. 번스는 당시 자신의 심적 상태에 대해 영국 점령군의 폭력에 저항하는 평화 시위에 참여하기 위해 거리로 나가면 무자비한 구타 밖에는 이루어지는 것이 없었다고 고백했다. 그래서 번스는 저항의 수단으로 음악을 선택했다. 

 

얼스터는 아일랜드 섬의 전통적인 네 지방 중 하나다. 북아일랜드로 생각해도 무방하다. 얼스터의 가장 큰 도시는 벨파스트다. 얼스터는 영국이 아일랜드를 강제 점령했을 때 개신교 신자들을 대거 이주시켰던 지역이다. 영국의 식민정책에 편승한 신교도들은 토착 얼스터인들의 독립 요구를 저지하고 탄압하는 데 앞장섰다.

번스는 'Alternative Ulster'에 대해 “이 곡은 전통 펑크 스타일로 쓴, 할 일 없음에 대한 노래다."라면서 “1970년대 중반 벨파스트에 사는 10대 청소년에게 그건 무엇보다도 중요한 현실이었다. 갈 데 없는 것에 대한 권태감 그 자체였다.”고 말했다. 가디언 지는 2003년 이 노래에 대해 “밴드 멤버 자신들 고향에서의 경험을 정의내렸던 야만성과 지루함의 지독한 양조물”이라고 평했다.

가사 'Take a look where you're livin'. You got the army on the street. And the R-U-C dog of repression. Is barking at your feet. Is this the kind of place you want to live? Is this where you want?'를 보면 영국에 대한 북아일랜드인들의 저항의지가 극명하게 드러난다. 가사는 북아일랜드인들에게 '자 네가 어떤 곳에서 사는지 봐. 길거리에는 군대가 있고 억압의 RUC 개가 발밑에서 짖고 있어. 여기가 네가 살고 싶은 곳이야? 여기가 네가 원하는 곳이야?'라고 묻는다. RUC는 북아일랜드에서 영국군과 함께 아일랜드공화국군(IRA, Irish Republican Army)을 토벌하던 왕립얼스터보안대(RUC, Royal Ulster Constabulary)를 말한다.

제목 'Alternative Ulster'가 바로 이 노래의 주제라고 할 수 있다. 영국이 강제 점령한 얼스터의 대안은 과연 무엇일까? 그건 바로 자주 독립이 아닐까? 그래서  스티프 리틀 핑거스는 마지막에 'Alternative Ulster/Alternative Ulster/Alternative Ulster/Alternative Ulste'라고 부르짖는다.
