'Can the Circle Be Unbroken(캔 더 서클 비 언브로큰)'은 에이더 루스 해버숀(Ada Ruth Habershon)과 찰스 허친슨 게이브리얼(Charles Hutchinson Gabriel)이 작곡한 찬송가 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken?'(고리는 다시 이어질까요?)을 앨빈 플레즌트 딜레이니 카터(Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter)가 컨트리 포크 송(country/folk song)으로 편곡한 것이다. 제목은 '고리가 이어질 수 있을까요?'의 뜻이 되겠다. 가사는 아들이 어머니의 죽음을 애도하는 내용이다.

'Can the Circle Be Unbroken'은 전통 미국 포크 음악 그룹 카터 패밀리(Carter Family) 덕분에 처음으로 주목을 받았다. 카터 패밀리는 앨빈 카터와 그의 아내 새러 카터(Sara Carter), 에즈러 카터(Ezra Carter)와 그의 아내 메이벨 카터(Maybelle Carter), 그리고 그들의 자녀들로 결성된 가족 그룹이었다. 새러와 메이벨은 사촌간이었다.

애팔래치아 산맥 기슭에서 농사를 짓고 살던 카터 패밀리는 1920년대 후반 다수의 히트 곡을 발표했다. 하지만 당시 불어닥친 대공황의 여파로 카터 패밀리도 많은 고통을 받았다. 이들은 대공황 속에서 겪은 곤궁과 상실, 믿음을 노래함으로써 많은 사람들의 가난에 지친 삶을 위로해 주었더. 하지만 대공황의 여파로 앨빈과 사라도 결국 결혼생활의 파경을 맞고 말았다.

앨빈 카터는 그 시대의 민요를 발굴해서 컨트리 송으로 개조하기 위해 광대한 평원과 목초지를 돌아다녔다. 사라와 메이벨은 카터 스크래치(Carter scratch)라는 독특한 기타 연주법을 고안하여 리드미컬하고 서정성이 풍부한 노래들을 만들어냈다. 이후 카터 스크래치 주법은 뮤지션들의 모방 대상이 되었다.
