'Le Gorille'(르 고릴, 고릴라)은 한국에서는 내전이 한창이던 1952년에 발매된 프랑스 싱어송라이터 조르주 브라상(Georges Brassens)의 앨범 'La Mauvaise Réputation'(라 모뻬 레퓌타숑, 나쁜 평판)' 8번 트랙 수록곡이다. 이 곡은 'La Chasse Aux Papillons'(라 샤스 오 빠삐용, 나비잡이)를 B면으로 하여 싱글로도 발매되었다.

'Le Gorille'은 동물원에서 한 무리의 여성들이 수컷 고릴라의 생식기를 관찰하는 장면을 묘사한다. 고릴라가 갑자기 우리를 탈출하자 100세 할머니를 제외한 모든 여성들은 도망친다. 발정 난 고릴라는 검은 옷을 입은 판사를 여자로 착각해 강간한다. 브라상은 후에 바로 그 판사가 그날 일찍 한 남자에게 단두대 형을 선고했으며, 지금은 유죄 판결을 받은 범죄자처럼 자비를 구하며 헛된 비명을 지르고 있음을 폭로한다.

'Le Gorille'은 출시 당시 매우 논란이 많았다. 음란한 가사 때문이기도 하지만, 무엇보다 프랑스에서 사형제도가 시행되던 당시 사형에 반대하는 반체제적인 입장을 취했기 때문이다. 당시 이 노래는 모든 프랑스 라디오 방송국에서 금지곡으로 묶여 전파를 타지 못했다.

제2차 세계대전이 한창이던 1943년 3월 브라상은 독일의 의무노동봉사(STO, Service du travail obligatoire)라는 강제 노동수용소에 끌려갔다. 독일의 강제노동수용소에서 브라상은 동료 노동자들을 즐겁게 해주기 위해 많은 노래들을 작곡했다. 'Le Gorille'도 그런 노래들 가운데 하나였다. 1년 뒤 10일의 휴가를 받아 파리로 간 브라상은 수용소로 돌아가지 않고 숨어서 'Le Gorille'을 수정하고 손질하여 완성했다.

'Le Gorille'을 대폭 뜯어고쳐서 완성한 결과, 원곡에서 유일하게 남은 단 한 구절이 바로 'Gare au gorille'(갸르 오 고릴, Beware of the gorilla!, 고릴라를 조심해요!)였다. 원곡에서 '고릴라'는 강제 노동수용소 감시원들을 가리키는 말이었으나, 정식 발매 버전에서는 단단하고 '대물'인 성기를 가진 프리아포스(Priapus)적 존재로 그 의미 전환을 한다. 사형제도를 반대했던 브라상은 이 노래에서 고릴라를 권력자, 특히 사형제도를 비난하는 상징물로 사용했다.

브라상은 'Le Gorille'로 얻은 반체제적인 악명(?) 덕분에 이후 그의 다른 작품들은 많은 상을 받았다. 그의 작품은 프랑스 교과서에도 다수 실렸다. 브라상이 1950년대 초에 선보인 이 저항적 노래는 오늘날까지도 영향을 미치고 있다. 논란을 몰고 다니는 래퍼 조이 스타(Joey Starr)는 2006년 'Le Gorille'에 경의를 표하는 'Gare au jaguar'(갸르 오 재구와, 표범을 조심해요)를 발표하기도 했다.

Suddenly, the well-enclosed prison 갑자기 잘 잠겼던 철창이/Where the fine animal lived 그 멋진 동물이 살았던 곳/Opens, we don't know why. I suppose 왜 그런지는 모르지만, 그래요/We hadn't closed the door properly. 우리가 문을 제대로 닫지 않았겠지요/The ape, coming out of his cage 유인원이 우리 밖으로 나와/Said "It is today that I lose it!" "내가 그걸 잃는 건 오늘이다!"라고 말했죠/He was speaking about his virginity, 그는 자신이 숫총각이랬죠/You've all guessed it, I expect! 다들 짐작했을 겁니다/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!.....

 

The boss of the zoo 동물원의 보스/Cried, frantically: "Good Heavens! 미친듯이 외쳤죠, "맙소사!/It's stupefying because the gorilla 고릴라 때문에 기절할 것 같아요/Has never known a female!" 암컷을 본 적이 없어요!"/As soon as the female crew 여자들은 나오자마자/Knew that the ape was a virgin, 유인원이 숫총각임을 알았죠/Instead of seizing the opportunity 기회를 잡는 대신에/They shot off on two legs 그들은 두 발로 쏘았죠/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!...

 

These same ones who, recently 최근 같은 사람들이/Smouldered at him with a determined eye, 결의에 찬 눈으로 그를 비웃었죠/Ran away, proving that they hardly had any consistency; 그들은 거의 일관성이 없다는 것을 증명하면서 도망쳤죠/Especially vain was their fear, 특히 그들의 공포는 헛된 것이었죠/As the gorilla is a jolly fellow 고릴라는 유쾌한 친구이기에/Superior to man in the embrace, 인간보다 포옹을 잘 하죠/Many women will tell you! 많은 여성들이 말해 줄 겁니다/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!....

 

Everyone is rushing 모두가 서두르고 있어요/Out of reach of the horny ape, 흥분한 유인원에게 잡히지 않으려고요/Except a feeble old spinster 허약한 노처녀를 제외하고요/And a young stolid judge~ 그리고 젊고 무뚝뚝한 판사/Seeing everyone shying away 다들 수줍어하는 표정이네요/The primate quickened 영장류는 빨랐어요/His waddle towards the robes 고릴라는 법복을 입은 사람(판사)을 향해 뒤뚱뒤뚱 걸어갔죠/Of the old lady and the magistrate! 노부인과 치안판사를 향해서요/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!.....

 

"So what!" sighed the hundred-year-old, 백살 노인네는 "어쩌라는 거야!"라며 한숨을 쉬었죠/"That someone could still desire me, "누군가 여전히 날 원할 수도 있지/Would be extraordinary, 특별한 일이 될 거야/And, to be honest, unexpected!"; 그런데, 솔직히 예상치 못했던 일이야!"/The judge thought, impassively, 판사는 무표정하게 생각했죠/"That someone could take me for a monkey, 누군가 나를 원숭이라고 생각하는 건/Is completely impossible..." 완전 불가능해..."/What happened next proved him wrong! 그 다음에 일어난 일은 그가 틀렸다는 걸 증명했죠/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!...

 

Imagine that one of you could be, 여러분 중 한 명이 당한 일이라고 생각해 봅시다/Like the ape, obliged to 유인원처럼 어쩔 수 없이/Violate a judge or a very old woman, 판사나 늙은 여자를 범한다면/Which of the two would you choose? 둘 중에 누구를 선택하겠어요?/If the same choice 동일한 선택일 경우/Falls to me one of these days 언젠가는 내게 닥칠 겁니다/It is, I'm convinced, the old lady 내가 확신하건대 그건 노부인입니다/Who will be the object of my choice! 내 선택의 대상은 누구일까요!/Beware the gorilla! 고릴라를 조심해요!

 

But, unluckily, if the gorilla 하지만 불행히도 고릴라가/In the love games is worth his price, 사랑 게임에서는 그의 값어치가 있죠/We know that on the other hand, he excels 한편 우린 그가 탁월하다는 걸 알죠/Neither in taste, nor in intellect. 취향도 지성도 아닙니다/Instead of opting for the old woman, 노파를 선택하는 대신/Like anyone else would have, 다른 사람들처럼/He grabbed hold of the judge by the ear 그는 판사의 귀를 움켜쥐었죠/And dragged him away into the scrubland! 그리곤 그를 관목지대로 끌고 갔어요/Beware the gorilla!... 고릴라를 조심해요!....

 

What happened next would be delightful 다음에 일어난 일은 통쾌해요!/Unfortunately, I can't 유감스럽게도 난 못해요/Say it, and that's regretable, 말하자면 유감스런 일입니다/That would have made us laugh a little; 그건 우리를 좀 웃게 만들었죠/Because in the final moment, the judge 왜냐면 마지막 순간에 판사는/Screamed: "Mummy!", crying a lot, "엄마!"하고 울면서 비명을 질렀거든요/Like the man whom, that same day,79 같은 날 79살의 남자가 그랬던 것처럼요/He had decapitated 그는 (고릴라에게 강간당한 판사의 판결에 의해 단두대에서) 목이 잘렸답니다/Beware the gorilla! 고릴라를 조심하세요!

Tout à coup la prison bien close/Où vivait le bel animal/S'ouvre, on n'sait pourquoi, je suppose/Qu'on avait dû la fermer mal/Le singe, en sortant de sa cage/Dit "c'est aujourd'hui que j'le perds!"/Il parlait de son pucelage/Vous aviez deviné, j'espère!/Gare au gorille!

Celles-là même qui, naguère/Le couvaient d'un œil décidé/Fuirent, prouvant qu'elles n'avaient guère/De la suite dans les idées/D'autant plus vaine était leur crainte/Que le gorille est un luron/Supérieur à l'homme dans l'étreinte/Bien des femmes vous le diront!/Gare au gorille!

Supposez que l'un de vous puisse être/Comme le singe, obligé de/Violer un juge ou une ancêtre/Lequel choisirait-il des deux?/Qu'une alternative pareille/Un de ces quatre jours, m'échoie/C'est, j'en suis convaincu, la vieille/Qui sera l'objet de mon choix!/Gare au gorille!

 

Mais, par malheur, si le gorille/Aux jeux de l'amour vaut son prix/On sait qu'en revanche il ne brille/Ni par le goût ni par l'esprit/Lors, au lieu d'opter pour la vieille/Comme l'aurait fait n'importe qui/Il saisit le juge à l'oreille/Et l'entraîna dans un maquis!/Gare au gorille!

 

La suite serait délectable/Malheureusement, je ne peux/Pas la dire, et c'est regrettable/Ça nous aurait fait rire un peu/Car le juge, au moment suprême/Criait "maman!", pleurait beaucoup/Comme l'homme auquel, le jour même/Il avait fait trancher le cou/Gare au gorille!
