'Rise(라이즈)'는 1986년 1월 27일 발매된 UK 포스트 펑크(post-punk) 밴드 퍼블릭 이미지 리미티드(Public Image Ltd, PiL)의 5집 음반 'Album(앨범)' 2번 트랙 수록곡이다. 이 트랙은 1986년 1월 21일 앨범보다 며칠 먼저 첫 번째 싱글로 커트되어 나왔다. 곡목 'Rise'는 '일어나다, 솟아오르다' 정도의 뜻인데, 작가는 '들고일어나다, 봉기(蜂起)하다'라는 뜻을 강하게 암시하고 있다.

'Rise' 녹음 세션에는 UK 태생의 아일랜드계 US 싱어송라이터 존 라이든(John Lydon, 리드 보컬), 기타리스트/작곡가/음반 제작자 스티브 바이(Steve Vai, 기타), 일본 작곡가/피아니스트/음반 제작자/사회운동가 사카모도 류우이치(坂本龍一, 디지털 신서사이저 Fairlight CMI), US 베이시스트/음반 제작자/레이블 소유주 빌 라스웰(Bill Laswell, 프렛리스 베이스 기타), 재즈 드러머 토니 윌리엄스(Tony Williams, 드럼), 인도 바이얼리니스트/싱어송라이터 엘. 샹카르(L. Shankar, 바이얼린) 등이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 장르는 올터너티브 롹(Alternative rock), 러닝 타임은 앨범 버전 6분 5초, 7" 편집판 4분 27초다.

밴드명 'Public Image Ltd(PiL)'는 1968년 부커상(Booker Prize) 후보에 올랐던 스코틀랜드 작가 뮤리엘 스파크(Muriel Spark)의 소설 'The Public Image'에서 따왔다. 소설의 주인공 애너벨(Annabel)은 자신의 경력을 이어가기 위해 신중하게 자신의 이미지를 그럴듯하게 가공해서 포장하는 능력이 뛰어난 인물이다. 라이든은 UK 펑크 롹 밴드 섹스 피스톨즈(Sex Pistols, SP)의 리드 보컬 출신이다. SP는 매니저 맬컴 맥라렌(Malcolm McLaren)에게 착취당하고, 언론에 이용당한 아픈 경험이 있다. SP 시절 존 라이든의 무대명은 조니 로튼(Johnny Rotten)이었다. 그는 SP 시절의 흔적을 지우기 위해 이름도 존 라이든으로 바꿨다.

'Rise'는 리드 보컬 라이든과 베이시스트 라스웰이 공동으로 작곡했다. 라이든은 남아프리카공화국(남아공)을 강압 통치하던 UK계 백인들이 자행한 비인간적인 유색인종 차별정책 아파르트헤이트(apartheid)와 남아공 흑인해방운동단체 아프리카민족회의(African National Congress, ANC) 지도자 넬슨 만델라(Nelson Mandela)로부터 영감을 받았다. 그는 또 UK계 백인들이 남아공 아파르트헤이트 당시 흑인들을 대상으로 사용한 고문 기술과 북아일랜드 독립 운동을 탄압하던 UK 왕립 얼스터 경찰대(Royal Ulster Constabulary)가 아일랜드인을 대상으로 사용한 전기 고문 같은 심문 방법에서도 영감을 받았다. 가사 'They put a hot wire to my head(그들은 내 머리에 전선을 꽂았어)'는 바로 전기 고문을 묘사한 구절이다.

가사 'May the road rise with you(당신과 함께 길이 솟아오르기를)' 구절은 아일랜드의 오래된 축복인 'go n-éirí an bóthar leat'를 직역한 것이다. 이 아일랜드 축복은 'May the road rise up to meet you(길이 솟아올라 당신을 만나기를)' 또는 'May you succeed in your efforts(당신의 노력이 성공하기를)' 등으로 번역된다. 'Anger is an energy(분노는 기운이다)'라는 문구는 라이든이 2014년에 쓴 자서전의 제목이 되었다.
