'Rock Star(롹 스타)'는 2001년 8월 6일 발매된 US 펑크 롹 밴드 N*E*R*D의 데뷔 스튜디오 앨범 'In Search of...(인 서치 오브...)'의 11번 트랙이다. 이 트랙은 2002년 7월 29일 앨범에서 첫 싱글 'Lapdance(랩댄스)'에 이어 두 번째 싱글로 커트되어 나왔다. 앨범 수록 원래의 곡명(曲名)은 'Rock Star - Poser'다. 'Poser(포우저)'는 '뻐기는 사람, 으스대는 사람, 위선자(僞善者)'라는 뜻이다.

'Rock Star'의 녹음 세션에는 패럴 윌리엄스(Pharrell Williams, 리드 보컬, 키보드), 채드 휴고(Chad Hugo, 기타, 베이스 기타, 백보컬), 셰이 헤일리(Shay Haley, 드럼, 백 보컬) 등 밴드 멤버 3명이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 어릴 때부터 동무였던 윌리엄스와 휴고는 작곡/음반 제작 듀오 넵튭스(The Neptunes)를 결성했다. 헤일리도 이들의 어릴 적 동무였다. 곡은 N*E*R*D 멤버가 공동으로 썼으며, 제작은 넵튠스가 맡았다. 장르는 하드코어 힙합(Hardcore hip hop), 알앤비(R&B), 팝(pop), 랩 롹(rap rock), 러닝 타임은 일렉트로닉 버전 4분 29초, 롹 버전 4분 19초다.

앨범에 수록된 'Rock Star'는 넵튠스의 전매특허(專賣特許)인 신서사이저와 전자 드럼 프로그래밍 사운드가 특징이다. N*E*R*D는 자신들만의 색깔을 살리고, 롹과 랩의 통합을 위해 2001년 버전을 폐기하고 US 올터너티브 롹 밴드 스파이몹(Spymob)과 협업으로 'Rock Star'를 다시 녹음했다. 드러머 헤일리는 "우리는 롹계와 랩계를 한데 통합시킬 뜻이 있다."는 포부를 밝혔다. 리드 보컬 윌리엄스는 "우린 독자성을, 실제적 관점을 내놓고 싶었다. 다른 이들의 관점에 그저 색을 칠하는 정도로 끝내는 것과 상반되는 의미에서다... 이 노래는 힘에 관한 것이다. 랩 음악 중에는 허풍과 겉치레가 다인 사람들에 대한 노래가 많다. 하지만 롹에서는 그런 노래가 많지 않다."고 말했다.

팝 칼럼니스트 로버트 다이머리(Robert Dimery)는 'Rock Star'에 대해 "재녹음 과정을 거쳐 2002년 3월 다시 발매된 버전은 미니애폴리스 롹 밴드 스파이몹의 도움으로 실제 악기 사운드를 활용하게 된다. 확연히 두드러졌던 이 싱글은 한껏 부풀려놓은 랩-롹의 강력한 패스티쉬였고, 윌리엄스의 맹렬한 가성은 장르의 틀에 도전하는 자기 선언의 신호였다. 공격적 음악 편성은, 죽었다 깨도 뉴 메틀 밴드 림프 비즈킷의 음악은 듣지 않겠다 할 비트 중독자의 마음조차 움직여 놓기에 충분했다."고 평했다.

'Rock Star'는 UK 싱글 차트 15위, 힙합/알앤비 차트 6위를 기록하는 등 비교적 괜찮은 성적을 올렸다. US 올터너티브 에어플라이 차트에서는 36위, 호주 차트에서는 10위를 차지했다. 이 노래는 존 스톡웰 감독, 케이트 보즈워스, 미셸 로드리게스, 사노에 레이크 주연의 2002년 스포츠 로맨스 영화 'Blue Crush(블루 크러쉬)', 애덤 쉥크만 감독, 퀸 라티파, 스티브 마틴 주연의 2003년 코미디 영화 'Bringing Down the House(브링 다운 더 하우스)', 존 마이클 맥도나프 감독, 브렌던 글리슨, 돈 치들 주연의 2011년 코미디 스릴러 범죄 영화 'The Guard(더 가드) 사운드트랙에 삽입되었다.

'Rock Star' 뮤직 비디오 영상에는 N*E*R*D 멤버들의 모습이 담겨 있다. N*E*R*D 멤버들은 배우 랜디 퀘이드(Randy Quaid)가 연기하는 험상궂고 사나운 고등학교 체육 교사에게 지도를 받는 학생으로 등장한다. 멤버들은 체육 교사, 다른 학생들과 함께 체육 시간에 춤을 추면서 'Rock Star' 공연을 시작한다. 이때 흰목꼬리감기원숭이가 결국 체육관으로 뛰어들어 혼란을 일으키기 시작한다.
