'Broken Heart(브로큰 허트) - 상심'은 영국의 스페이스 락 밴드(space rock band) Spiritualized(스피리추얼라이즈드)가 1997년에 발매한 세 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space'의 타이틀 곡이다. 제이슨 '스페이스맨' 피어스(Jason 'Spaceman' Pierce), 톰 에드워즈(Tom Edwards), 도겐(Doggen), 타이프폴산드라(Thighpaulsandra), 존 콕슨(John Coxon) 등으로 구성된 스피리튜얼라이즈드는 1992년 1집 앨범 'Lazer Guided Melodies'를 내면서 데뷔했다.

'Broken Heart'는 제이슨 피어스가 작곡했다. 제이슨 피어스와 사귀던 키보드 주자 케이트 래들리(Kate Radley)는 그를 떠나 버브(The Verve)의 간판 리처드 애시크로프트(Richard Ashcroft)와 결혼하고, 밴드 스피리추얼라이즈드에서도 떠났다. 'Broken Heart'는 케이트 래들리와 헤어지기 2년 전에 쓴 곡이지만 마치 이별을 예감이라도 한 듯 제이슨 피어스의 '상심'이 절실하게 표현되어 있다.

'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space'는 평단의 극찬을 받았고, 이 앨범에 실린 'Broken Heart'를 두고 영국의 대중음악 잡지 '모조(Mojo)'는 '슬픔에 젖어 허리가 거의 접힌 듯'하다.'고 평했다. 이를 필두로 언론에서는 'Broken Heart'가 래들리와 이별한 피어스의 아픔을 노래한 곡이라고 기정사실화했다. 하지만 피어스만은 이러한 주장들을 강력하게 부인했다.

피어스는 래들리와 헤어지기 2년 전에 'Broken Heart'를 썼다고 주장했다. 그는 '사람들은 마지막 앨범이 내 이별과 관련된 것이라며 무게감을 부여하려 했다.'면서 '나는 그걸 부정했다. 하지만 그들은 현실보다 동화 같은 스토리를 계속 밀고 나갔다.'고 말했다. 피어스의 말에도 불구하고 'Broken Heart'에는 가슴이 찢어지는 듯한 이별의 상심이나 과거의 큰 상처로 인한 내면의 상실감이 담겨 있다. 그런 상실감이 마치 래들리와의 이별에서 오기라도 한 듯.....
