'Edge of Seventeen'(에지 오브 세븐틴)은 1981년에 발매된 미국 싱어송라이터 스티비 닉스(Stevie Nicks)의 데뷔 솔로 스튜디오 앨범 'Bella Donna'(벨라 도나)의 6번 트랙 수록곡이다. 이 노래는 1982년 2월 4일 앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 커트되어 출시되었다.
'Edge of Seventeen'의 녹음에는 스티비 닉스(리드 보컬)를 비롯해서 와디 와흐텔(Waddy Wachtel, 기타), 밥 글라웁(Bob Glaub, 베이스 기타), 러스 쿤켈(Russ Kunkel, 드럼), 보비 홀(Bobbye Hall, 퍼커션), 벤몬트 텐취(Benmont Tench, 오르간), 로이 비탄(Roy Bittan, 피아노) 등이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 로리 페리(Lori Perry)와 섀런 셀라니(Sharon Celani)는 배킹 보컬을 담당했다.
'Edge of Seventeen'은 닉스의 삼촌 조너선(Jonathan)과 전설적인 롹 밴드 비틀즈(The Beatles) 멤버 존 레논(John Lennon)의 죽음에서 영감을 받았다. 조너선괴 레논은 공교롭게도 1980년 12월 같은 주에 사망했다.
노래 제목 'Edge of Seventeen'은 'Bella Donna' 3번 트랙 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around'(스탑 드래긴 마이 하트 어라운드)를 함께 부른 친구 톰 페티(Tom Petty)의 첫 번째 아내 제인(Jane)과 닉스가 이들 부부의 첫 만남에 대해 나눈 대화에서 따왔다. 제인은 톰과 'at the age of seventeen-17살에' 만났다고 말했는데, 그녀의 강한 남부 억양은 닉스에게 'Edge of Seventeen'처럼 들렸다. 닉스는 그 발음이 너무 좋아서 제인에게 노래를 만들면 'Edge of Seventeen'을 제목으로 삼겠으며, 영감에 대한 그녀의 공로를 인정하겠다고 약속했다.
닉스는 원래 'Edge of Seventeen'을 페티 부부의 서로에 대한 사랑의 헌정곡으로 사용할 계획이었다. 하지만 1980년 12월 같은 주에 일어난 삼촌 조너선의 죽음과 존 레논의 암살 사건은 닉스에게 이 노래에 대한 새로운 영감을 주었다. 닉스의 프로듀서이자 연인인 지미 아이오빈(Jimmy Iovine)은 레논의 절친한 친구였으며, 그녀는 연인을 위로하는 데 무력감을 느꼈다.
얼마 후 닉스는 암으로 죽어가는 삼촌 조너선과 함께 애리조나 주 피닉스로 날아갔다. 닉스는 삼촌이 죽을 때까지 그의 가족과 함께 있었다. 가사에는 두 존의 죽음으로 인한 깊은 슬픔과 큰 상실감이 담겨 있다.
'Edge of Seventeen'은 독특한 16분음표 기타 리프, 드럼 비트 , 전형적이고 단순한 코드 구조가 특징이다. 닉스는 사실 흰날개비둘기의 울음소리를 들어본 적이 없었다. 오프닝 가사 'Just like the white winged dove(흰날개비둘기처럼)' 구절은 닉스가 1980년 피닉스(Phoenix) 레스토랑에서 읽었던 메뉴에서 영감을 받았다.
가사는 매우 상징적이다. 닉스는 흰날개비둘기가 죽을 때 육신을 떠나는 영혼을 상징한다고 믿었으며, 일부 구절은 삼촌 조너선의 죽음에 이르기까지 그녀의 경험을 포착한다. 닉스와 백업 가수가 부르는 비둘기 울음소리 'ooh baby ooh'는 올빼미 울음소리 'whooing'과 유사하게 들린다.
