'The First Cut Is the Deepest'(더 퍼스트 컷 이즈 더 디피스트)는 1967년 12월 영국의 싱어송라이터 캣 스티븐스(Cat Stevens)의 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'New Masters'(뉴 매스터스)의 7번 트랙이다. 작곡자는 캣 스티븐스이다. 'The First Cut Is the Deepest'는 '첫 번째 상처가 가장 깊다.' 정도의 뜻이 되겠다. 'First Cut'은 '첫사랑의 실연'을 의미한다.

'The First Cut Is the Deepest'는 첫사랑에 실패한 뒤 또 한 번의 사랑을 시도해보려는 실연당한 여인의 가슴 아픈 이야기를 담고 있다. 주인공은 사랑을 잃은 후 다시 사랑할 수 있을지, 또 어떻게 다시 사랑할 수 있을지 망설인다.

'The First Cut Is the Deepest'는 캣 스티븐스의 앨범 'New Masters'보다 먼저 1967년 5월 P. P. 아놀드의 싱글로 먼저 출시되었다. 스티븐스는 작곡료 30파운드를 받고 아놀드에게 곡을 팔았다. 아놀드 버전은 영국 싱글 차트에서 18위에 올랐다. 아놀드의 소울풀한 보컬에 하프시코드 , 호른, 현악기를 바탕으로 한 업 템포의 연주가 특징이다. 아놀드 버전은  2012년 마틴 맥도나(Martin Mcdonagh) 감독, 콜린 파렐(Colin Farrell) 주연 영화 'Seven Psychopaths'(세븐 싸이코패스)에도 등장했다.
