'He's Rebel'(히즈 어 레블)은 진 피트니(Gene Pitney)가 작곡했으며, 로스 앤절러스 걸 그룹 블라섬스(The Blossoms)가 처음 취입했다. 피트니는 원래 이 곡을 4인조 걸 그룹 쉬럴(Shirel)을 위해 만들었다. 그러나, 쉬럴은 이 노래의 취입을 거절했다.

인간성 개차반인 살인마이자 천재 프로듀스 필 스펙터(Phil Spector)는 'He's Rebel'을 수록할 예정인 비키 카(Vikki Carr)의 데뷔 앨범보다 자신이 프로듀싱한 곡이 먼저 출시되기를 원했다. 그래서, 이 곡을 크리스털스(The Crystals)에게 주려고 했다. 하지만 당시 바버러 올스턴(Barbara Alston)이 이끄는 크리스털스는 미국 동부에서 공연 여행 중이었다.

할 수 없이 스펙터는 차선책으로 달린 러브(Darlene Love)가 이끄는 밴드 블라섬스를 선발해서 녹음했다. 그럼에도 음반 크레딧에는 크리스털스의 이름이 올라갔다. 애초에 계약을 그렇게 했기 대문이다. 차후에 발매된 음반에는 크리스털스가 부른 오리지널 버전이 수록되었다.

'He's Rebel'은 사회 관습을 무시하는 한 청년과 사랑에 빠진 소녀의 이야기를 담고 있다. 오해를 받기도 하지만 자신은 착하고 성실하다고 주장하며, 그에게도 한결같은 사랑을 다짐하고 있다. 인트로의 피아노 리프는 세션 뮤지션 알 드 로리(Al De Lory), 브리지 부분의 색소폰 솔로는 색소포니스트 & 플로리스트 스티브 더글러스(Steve Douglas)의 연주다. 특이하게도 이 곡에는 스트링(현악기) 연주가 없다.

필 스펙터가 프로듀싱한 크리스털스의 'He's Rebel' 싱글 버전은 1962년 11월 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 1위를 차지했다. 2004년에 이 곡은 롤링 스톤의 '역사상 가장 위대한 500곡' 목록에서 263위에 올랐다. 빌보드는 이 노래를 '역사상 가장 위대한 걸 그룹 노래 100선' 목록에서 31위로 선정했다.
