'The Humpty Dance'(더 험프티 댄스)는 얼터너티브 힙합 그룹 디지털 언더그라운드(Digital Underground, DU)의 데뷔 앨범 'Sex Packets'(섹스 패키츠)의 오프닝 트랙이다. 1990년 1월 앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 커트되어 발매된 이 곡은 팝 차트 11위, R&B 차트 7위, 빌보드 랩 싱글 차트 1위에 올랐다.
'The Humpty Dance'는 리드 보컬 쇽 지(Shock G)의 또 다른 자아인 험프티 험프(Humpty Hump)가 부른 것으로 캐릭터의 두 번째 음악적 모습을 나타낸다. 첫 번째는 1989년 봄에 발표된 사전 앨범 비디오 싱글인 디지털 언더그라운드(DU)의 'Doowutchyalike'(두우치얼라이크)였다. 이 노래는 다양한 아티스트와 프로듀서들이 샘플링했다. 뮤직 비디오 백그라운드에서 춤추는 어린 댄서는 바로 투팍 샤커(Tupac Shakur)다.
'The Humpty Dance'의 드럼 트랙을 구성하는 5가지 요소 중 하나인 1소절 길이의 드럼 루프는 슬라이 앤 더 패밀리 스톤(Sly and the Family Stone, 패밀리 스톤)의 'Sing a Simple Song'(싱 어 심플 송)에서 샘플링한 것이다. DU는 패밀리 스톤의 드럼 루프를 4개의 다른 요소와 통합했다. 두 개의 베이스 음 사이를 번갈아 가며 연주하는 깊은 톤의 킥 드럼, 박수 스네어(밴드 팔러먼트의 'Theme From the Black Hole'에서 가져온 샘플), 8분 음표로 프로그래밍된 드럼 머신 하이햇(hi-hat, 풋 심벌즈), 모든 소절에 한 번씩 들어가 있는 기타 히트는 모두 'Humpty Dance' 드럼 트랙을 구성하는 조합이다. 노래의 코러스 섹션에 들어있는 보컬 샘플은 1980년 앨범 'Trombipulation'(트롬비풀레이션)의 'Let's Play House'(렛스 플레이 하우스)에서 가져온 것이다.
'The Humpty Dance'는 험프티의 우스꽝스러운 외모에도 불구하고 그의 성적 기량에 대한 찬사이다. 험프티는 당시 성공한 래퍼들 사이의 획일성에 대한 항의인 '당신이 익숙한 스타일과 이미지를 망칠 것이다.'라는 오프닝 대사와 함께 등장 테마를 소개한다.

'The Humpty Dance'는 1989년 DU의 첫 번째 뮤직 비디오 'Doowutchyalike'로 데뷔한 그의 또 다른 자아 험프티 험프(Humpty Hump)가 특징인 쇽 지의 두 번째 곡이다. 캐릭터는 화려한 의상을 입고, 코주부 안경을 쓴 우스꽝스러운 사람(buffoon persona, 어릿광대 페르소나)이다.
험프티를 위해 가상의 전기가 구성되었다. 이야기는 가상의 그룹 스무스 에디 앤 더 험퍼스(Smooth Eddie and the Humpers)의 전 리드 싱어인 에드워드 엘링턴 험프리 3세(Edward Ellington Humphrey III)가 어느 날 튀김기로 인한 부엌 사고로 코에 화상을 입은 후 래퍼가 되었다는 것이다. 사고로 인해 캐릭터는 큰 코 변장을 한다.
2008년 'The Humpty Dance'는 VH1의 '2007년 가장 위대한 힙합 100곡' 차트에서 30위, VH1의 '2007년 100대 가장 위대한 노래' 차트에서 65위에 선정되었다. 이 노래는 1990년 MTV 비디오 뮤직 어워드에서 베스트 랩 비디오 후보로 지명되었지만 MC 해머의 'U Can't Touch This'(유 캔트 터치 디스)에 밀렸다. 아이러니하게도 MC 해머는 'The Humpty Dance'에 이름이 나온다. 이 노래는 숀 레비 감독, 라이언 레이놀즈 주연 2021년 영화 '프리 가이(Free Guy)에 등장한다.
'The Humpty Dance'는 힙합/랩 아티스트들에 의해 가장 많이 샘플링된 곡 중 하나다. 다른 곡에서 100번이 넘는 샘플링을 자랑한다. 발매된 지 3년도 채 되지 않은 1993년까지 이미 20개 이상의 인기곡에 샘플링되었는데, 대부분 드럼 트랙을 사용했다. 실제로 DU는 세 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'The Body-Hat Syndrome'(더 바디-햇 신드롬)의 5번 트랙 'The Humpty Dance Awards'(더 험프티 댄스 어워즈)'를 자신의 트랙을 샘플링한 많은 아티스트들에게 유머러스하게 헌정했다. 그 이후 아이스 큐브(Ice Cube)에서 퍼블릭 에너미(Public Enemy)에 이르기까지 수십 명의 아티스트들이 'The Humpty Dance'를 샘플링했다.
