'Little Floffy Clouds'(리틀 플러피 클라우즈)는 1990년 11월 영국의 앰비언트 하우스(ambient house) 그룹 더 오브(The Orb)가 발매한 싱글이다. 노래는 록 밴드 킬링 조크(Killing Joke)의 창립 멤버이자 베이시스트 마틴 '유쓰' 글러버(Martin 'Youth' Glover), 더 오브 공동 창립자 앨릭스 패터슨(Alex Paterson), 작곡가 스티브 라이히(Steve Reich) 등 3명이 공동으로 작곡했다. 믹스는 더 오브의 창립 멥버 지미 코티(Jimmy Cauty)가 떠나고, 그 대신 들어온 크리스 '쓰래쉬' 웨스턴(Kris 'Thrash' Weston)이 맡았다. 곡목 'Little Floffy Clouds'는 '솜털 구름' 정도의 뜻이 되겠다.

앰비언트 하우스(ambient house)는 애시드 하우스(acid house)와 앰비언트 음악(ambient music)의 요소가 결합하여 1980년대 후반 영국에서 나타난 하우스 음악의 다운템포 하위 장르다. 일종의 댄스 음악으로 휴게실이나 댄스 클럽 등에서 발전한 음악이다. 애시드 하우스는 흔히 마약을 먹고 벌이는 환각 파티 때 쓰는 빠른 비트의 전자 음악, 앰비언트 음악은 음색과 분위기를 강조하는 장르다. 하우스 음악은 반복적인 4/4박자, 분당 120박자의 전형적인 템포가 특징이다. 1980년대 초중반 시카고의 언더그라운드 클럽에서 DJ와 음악 PD들이 디스코 음악에 좀더 기계적인 비트를 주기 시작하면서 만들어졌다.

'Little Floffy Clouds'의 도입부는 1990년 존 웨이트 BBC 라디오 4(John Waite BBC Radio 4) 특집 방송에서 가져온 것이다. 목소리의 주인공 존 웨이트는 는 MTV 레이블 디렉터 댄 웨이트(Dan Waite)의 사촌 동생이다.

문제는 더 오브가 리키 리 존스의 인터뷰 음원을 무단 도용했다는 점이다. 존스의 음반 회사는 더 오브를 표절로 고소해서 손해 배상을 받아내려고 했었다. 다행히 표절 문제는 법정까지 가지 않고 더 오브가 5천 달러를 배상하는 선에서 해결됐다.

 

'Little Floffy Clouds'는 세르지오 레오네(Sergio Leone) 감독, 헨리 폰다(Henry Fonda), 클라우디아 카르디날레(Claudia Cardinale), 찰스 브론슨(Charles Bronson) 주연의 1968년 서부 영화 'Once Upon a Time in the West'(원스 어폰 어 타임 인 더 웨스트)에 나오는 엔니오 모리코네(Ennio Morricone)의 저 유명한 사운드트랙 'The Man With The Harmonica'(더 맨 위드 더 하모니카)에서도 샘플링했다. 또, 스티브 라이히가 작곡하고 재즈 기타리스트 팻 메쓰니(Pat Metheny)가 녹음한 멀티트랙 기타 곡인 'Electric Counterpoint'(일렉트릭 카운터포인트)의 일부도 무단 사용했다.

마틴 '유쓰' 글러버에 따르면 'Little Floffy Clouds'에 영감을 준 것은 버밍엄 레코드 가게에서 일했던 더 오브의 팬이 한쪽에는 'Electric Counterpoint', 다른 한쪽에는 리키 리 존스의 인터뷰가 있는 테이프를 보내왔을 때였다. 라이히는 당시 더 오브가 유명하지 않았기 때문에 자신의 음반사에 이들을 표절로 고소하지 말아달라고 부탁했다고 주장했지만, 앨릭스 패터슨은 "라이히는 처음부터 20%를 달라고 요구했다."고 말했다.

 

'Little Floffy Clouds'의 드럼 트랙은 미국 싱어송라이터 해리 닐슨(Harry Nilsson)의 7집 앨범 'Nilsson Schmilsson'(닐슨 슈밀슨)에 샘플링한 것이다. 구체적으로 앨범 'Nilsson Schmilsson'의 B면 4번 트랙 'Jump Into the Fire'(점프 인투 더 파이어)에서 세션 드러머 짐 고든(Jim Gordon)이 연주한 드럼 솔로를 가져온 것이다. 원곡의 빠르기는 45rpm이지만 샘플링에서는 33rpm으로 약간 느리게 했다. 이 곡에는 또한 자메이카 뮤지션 리 '스크래치' 페리(Lee 'Scratch' Perry)의 샘플도 포함되어 있다.
