'Dear Mama'(디어 마마)는 1995년 2월 21일 발매된 미국의 갱스터 래퍼 투팍(2Pac, 본명 Tupac Amaru Shakur)의 세 번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Me Against World'(미 어겐스트 월드)에서 리드 싱글로 커트되어 나왔다. 백 보컬은 스위트 프랭클린(Sweet Franklin)과 레지 그린(Reggie Green)이다.

'Dear Mama'는 그의 어머니 아페니 샤커(Afeni Shakur)에 대한 찬가이다. 노래에서 투팍은 어린 시절의 빈곤과 어머니의 크랙 코케인(crack cocaine) 중독에 대해 자세히 설명하고 있다. 하지만 그는 어머니에 대한 사랑과 깊은 존경심이 나쁜 기억을 대신한다고 주장한다. 어머니에게 바치는 이 헌정가는 투팍이 성폭행 혐의로 감옥에 들어가 있을 때 발매되었다.

'Dear Mama'는 빌보드 핫 랩 싱글 차트에서 5주 동안 정상에 올랐고, 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서는 9위에 올랐다. 싱글 'Dear Mama'는 1995년 7월 13일 RIAA로부터 플래티넘 인증을 받았았으며, 미국에서만 70만 장 이상의 판매고를 올렸다.

'Dear Mama'는 역대 최고의 힙합 중 하나로 평가받으면서 2009년에 문화적, 역사적, 미학적으로 중요한 작품으로 간주되어 미 의회 도서관의 국립 기록보관소에 등재되었다. 미 국립 기록보관소는 보도 자료에서 이 노래에 대해 '피살된 래퍼의 어머니와 마약 중독, 빈곤 및 사회적 무관심에 직면하여 가족을 유지하기 위해 고군분투하는 모든 어머니에 대한 감동적이고 웅변적인 경의'라고 평했다.

아페니 샤커와 그녀의 남편은 1960년대 후반~1970년대 초반에 뉴욕의 마르크스-레닌주의 흑인무장조직 흑표당(Black Panther Party)의 열성 당원이었다. 투팍은 아페니가 뉴욕 팬서 21(Panther 21) 사건 에서 미국 정부 및 뉴욕 랜드마크를 목표로 한 150개 이상의 혐의에 대해 무죄를 선고받고 출옥한 지 약 한 달 후에 태어났다. 아페니는 활동가가 되기 위해 어린 시절에 자주 학교에 빠졌으며, 청소년기에도 코케인에 중독되어 자주 결석했다. 

 

투팍은 17세에 아페니에 의해 집에서 쫓겨났고 몇 년 동안 연락이 거의 없었다. 어머니에 대한 존경심을 잃은 투팍은 이후 친구들과 함께 빈 아파트로 이사하여 시와 랩 가사를 쓰기 시작했다. 1990년 아페니는 마약 습관이 통제 불능임을 깨닫고 코네티컷 주 노워크(Norwalk)에 있는 약물 및 알코올 치료 센터에 등록했다. 마약 중독 치료가 끝난 뒤 그녀는 성공적인 레코드 아티스트로 떠오른 투팍과 화해했다.

'Dear Mama'는  투팍이 감옥에서 복역하기 직전에 만들어졌다. 트랙이 완성되자 투팍은 오랜 친구이자 배우 겸 감독인 제이다 핀켓 스미스(Jada Pinkett-Smith, 현재 영화배우 윌 스미스의 아내)에게 전화를 걸어 "이 노래는 우리 어머니에 대해 썼는데, 들어주었으면 한다"고 말했다. 제이다의 어머니도 약물 중독으로 어려움을 겪었으며, 어린 시절 마약 중독과 함께 성장한 경험이 둘 사이의 우정으로 이어졌다. 그녀는 나중에 이 노래를 들었을 때 감정이 복받쳤다고 말했다. 

 

'Dear Mama'는 수많은 래퍼들에게 영향을 미쳤다. 래퍼 에미넴(Eminem)은 싱글 'Dear Mama'가 발매된 다음 해에도 그의 차 안에서 끊임없이 이 노래를 들었다고 고백했다. 에미넴은 이 노래에 대해 "나에게 가장 큰 영향을 준 투팍의 노래 중 하나였고, 역대 힙합 중 가장 진심 어린 노래 중 하나였다"고 말했다. 켄드릭 라마(Kendrick Lamar)는 이 노래가 자신의 삶에 심오한 영향을 미쳤다면서 "나는 정말로 과거로 돌아가서 나약함의 가치와 자신을 표현하는 것을 두려워하지 않는 것의 가치에 감사한다."고 말했다.

'Dear Mama' 뮤직 비디오 도입부의 “감옥에 있을 때 임신 중이었던 나는 출산을 해도 아기가 나와 함께 있지 못할 것이라고 생각했어. 하지만 난 투팍이 태어나기 1달 3일 전 석방되었지. 정말 행복했어. 아들을 낳아서 말이야.”라는 내레이션은 아페니의 육성이다. 1996년 사망한 아들의 첫 기일에 아페니는 "이 노래가 정말 아름다운 이유는 나뿐만 아니라 전국 곳곳의 많은 여성, 나아가 세계 곳곳의 모든 여성들이 공감할 수 있다는 데 있다. 이 노랜 투팍이 모든 여성들에게 주는 선물이다. 완벽하지 못한 삶을 살았던 여성들, 실수를 저지르기도 했던 그런 여성들 말이다.”라고 말했다.
