'Marlene on the Wall(마를린 온 더 월)'은 1985년 5월 1일에 발매된 미국의 싱어송라이터 수잔 베이거(Suzanne Vega)의 데뷔 스튜디오 셀프 타이틀 앨범 A면 3번 트랙 수록곡이다. 그해 이 노래는 앨범에서 베이거의 데뷔 싱글로 커트되어 나왔다.

곡목 'Marlene on the Wall'은 '벽 위의 마를린' 정도의 뜻이 되겠다. 마를린(Marlene)은 팜 파탈르(femme fatale, 치명적인 여자, 요부, 악녀) 이미지로 유명한 독일 출신의 배우 겸 가수 마리 막달리너 '마를레네' 디트리히(Marie Magdalene 'Marlene' Dietrich, 영어식 발음 머리 마그달린 '마를린' 디트릭)이다.

'Marlene on the Wall'의 녹음 세션에는 수잔 베이거(보컬, 어쿠스틱 기타)를 비롯해서 수 에반스(Sue Evans, 드럼), 존 고든(John Gordon, 일렉트릭 기타), 프랭크 개비스(Frank Gavis, 베이스 기타), 씨피. 로쓰(신서사이저) 등이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다.

'Marlene on the Wall'은 난해하면서도 아름답고 생동감 넘치는 포크-팝이지만 하마터면 빛을 보지 못할 뻔했다. 난해한 포크-팝이 시장성이 없다고 판단한 음반사 A&M이 앨범 계약을 거절했기 때문이다. 이때 프로듀서 스티브 애다보(Steve Addabbo)가 은인처럼 나타났다. 그는 그룹 패티 스미스(Patti Smith)의 기타리스트 레니 케이(Lenny Kaye)와 함께 앨범 'Marlene on the Wall'을 제작했다.

 

'Marlene on the Wall'은 특이하게도 벽에 걸려 있는 마를린 디트리히의 포스터를 보고 영감을 받아서 쓴 곡이다. 힘겹게 살아가던 뉴욕 뮤지션 수잔 베이거는 이 노래를 쓰기 전 "매우 난잡한 생활을 했다."고 고백한 바 있다. 팜 파탈르적 삶을 살아가던 베이거는 우연히 마주친 마를린의 포스터를 보고 잃어버린 자아를 찾아 여정을 떠나는 한 소녀에 대한 노래를 쓰게 된다.

수잔 베이거는 'Marlene on the Wall'이 너무 사적이고 모호하다고 생각해서 성공에 대해 확신이 없었다. 하지만 당시 그녀의 기타리스트 존 고든은 멜로디가 경쾌해서 성공 가능성이 있다며 이 노래를 앨범의 오프닝 타이틀 곡으로 추천했다. 또한, 콘서트에서 오프닝 넘버로 삼으라고 권했다. 팝 칼럼니스트 로버트 다이머리(Robert Dimery)는 이 곡에 대해 '베어거의 여유로운 음성, 레너드 코언(Leonard Cohen) 스타일의 가사, 어쿠스틱 중심의 음악은 모두들 머다너(Madonna)처럼 해보려고 안달하던 시대에 특히 주목할 만한 것이었다.'고 평했다.

 

'Marlene on the Wall'은 1985년 싱글 발매 당시에는 별다른 주목을 받지 못했다. 하지만 그 이듬해 재발매된 싱글은 영국 차트에서 베이거의 첫 상위 40위에 오르는 히트곡이 되었다. 이후 이 노래는 베이거의 시그니처 곡 중 하나가 되었다.
