'Paradise City(패러다이스 시티)'는 1987년 6월 21일에 발매된 US 하드 롹 밴드 건즈 앤 로지스(Guns N' Roses, GNR)의 데뷔 앨범 'Appetite for Destruction(애피타이트 훠 디스트럭션)' A면 6번 트랙 수록곡이다. 앨범에서 신서사이저 연주가 들어간 유일한 곡이다. 이 트랙은 1989년 1월 싱글로 커트되어 출시되었다. 이후 밴드는 이 노래를 공연 단골 클로징 곡으로 연주해 왔다.

'Paradise City'의 녹음 세션에는 액슬 로즈(Axl Rose, 리드 보컬, 신서사이저), 슬래쉬(Slash, 리드 기타, 백 보컬), 이지 스트래들린(Izzy Stradlin, 리듬 기타, 백 보컬), 더프 '로즈' 맥케이건(Duff 'Rose' McKagan, 베이스 기타, 백 보컬), 스티븐 애들러(Steven Adler, 드럼) 등 밴드 멤버 5명이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 곡도 멤버 5명이 공동으로 썼다. 장르는 글램 메틀(Glam metal), 하드 롹(hard rock), 헤비 메틀(heavy metal), 러닝 타임은 6분 48초다.

리드 기타리스트 슬래쉬의 증언에 따르면 'Paradise City'는 밴드가 샌프란시스코 공연을 마치고 돌아오는 길에 투어 버스 뒷좌석에서 탄생했다고 한다. 기타 인트로는 슬래쉬의 작품이다. 'Sweet Child O' Mine(스윗 차일드 오 마인)'과 함께 슬래쉬의 개인기가 가장 잘 나타나 있는 곡이라고 할 수 있다. 슬래쉬의 현란한 기타 솔로가 매우 인상적이다. 슬래쉬도 자신의 최애곡(最愛曲)이 바로 이 곡이라고 밝힌 바 있다.

핀란드 롹 밴드 해노이 롹스(Hanoi Rocks)의 기타리스트 앤디 맥코이(Andy McCoy, 본명 Antti Hulkko)는 'Paradise City'가 자신들의 곡 'Lost in the City(로스트 인 더 시티)'의 느린 버전이라고 말했다. 해노이 롹스가 작곡한 여러 리프들을 GNR이 베꼈다는 것이다. GNR 창립 멤버이자 슬래쉬의 전임 기타리스트 트레이시 건즈(Tracii Guns)는 이 곡의 리프가 UK 헤비메틀 밴드 블랙 새버스(Black Sabbath)의 'Zero the Hero(지로우 더 히로우)'의 영향을 받았다고 말했다.

'Paradise City'는 사회의 모순을 주제한 곡이다. 밝은 분위기의 연주와는 달리 가사는 다소 어둡고 우울한 편이다. 가사 'Captain America's been torn apart(캡틴 아메리카는 찢겨졌어)' 구절은 신화에 가려진 US 사회의 어두운 면을 폭로하고 있다. 그래서 'Take me home/Oh, won't you please take me home(집으로 데려다 줘/오, 제발 집으로 데려다 줘)'라는 후렴구는 막판으로 갈수록 거의 절규에 가까워진다. 중간중간에 템포가 바뀌어서 다소 어색하기도 하지만 멤버들의 완벽한 연주로 매끄럽게 잘 연결하고 있다.

싱글 'Paradise City'는 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 5위로 정점을 찍었다. UK 싱글 차트에서는 6위, 아일랜드 싱글 차트에서는 1위를 차지했다. 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드 차트 2위, 스웨덴 차트 3위, 노르웨이 차트 4위에 이어 핀란드 차트에서도 6위에 오르며 국제적인 히트를 기록했다. VH1은 이 곡을 '역사상 가장 위대한 메탈 노래 40곡' 목록에서 21위, 롤링 스톤은 2010년 '역사상 가장 위대한 노래 500곡' 목록에서 459위로 선정했다. 공식 뮤직 비디오는 2023년 11월 19일 현재 조회수가 8억회에 육박하고 있다. 하지만, 얼티머트 클래식 롹(Ultimate Classic Rock), 스핀(Spin) 등은 이 노래를 밴드 최악의 노래 중 하나로 꼽았다.
