'Roadrunner(로드러너)'는 1976년 8월 발매된 US 롹 밴드 마던 러버스(The Modern Lovers)의 데뷔 스튜디오 셀프 타이틀 앨범 오프닝 트랙 수록곡이다. 로드러너(roadrunner)는 US 남서부와 중남부, 멕시코, 중앙아메리카 사막에서 발견되는 땅뻐꾸기인데, 긴 꼬리와 볏이 특징이며, 땅 위를 매우 빠르게 달리는 새다.

'Roadrunner'의 녹음 세션에는 자너선 리치맨(Jonathan Richman, 리드 보컬, 기타), 어니 브룩스(Ernie Brooks, 베이스 기타, 백 보컬), 제리 해리슨(Jerry Harrison, 피아노, 백 보컬), 데이비드 로빈슨(David Robinson, 드럼, 백 보컬) 등 밴드 멤버 4명이 공식 라인업으로 참여했다. 작곡은 밴드 리더 리치맨, 제작은 롹 밴드 벨벳 그라운드(Velvet Underground) 창립 멤버 존 케일(John Cale)이 맡았다. 장르는 프로토펑크(Proto punk), 거라쥐 롹(garage rock), 롹앤롤(rock and roll)이다. 러닝 타임은 1972/1976년 버전(Twice) 4분 4초, 1975/1977년 버전(Once) 4분 40초다.

어릴 때부터 리치맨과 친구였던 존 펠리스(John Felice)는 "10대 때부터 그와 함께 차를 타고 매사추세츠 128번 국도(보스턴 외곽을 일주하는 96km 길이의 환상 도로)와 유료 도로를 따라 운전하곤 했다. 언덕 위로 올라갔을 때 그는 라디오 타워와 번쩍이는 신호등을 보고 눈물을 흘리곤 했다. 그는 다른 사람들이 보지 못하는 사물에서 이 모든 아름다움을 보았다."고 회상했다. 리치맨은 'Roadrunner'를 "매사추세츠 128번 도로에 대한 송가(頌歌)"라고 말했다.

리치맨은 128번 국도를 달리던 경험에서 영감을 얻어 쓴 가사를 그의 우상(偶像) 벨벳 그라운드의 난잡하고 퇴폐적인 노래 'Sister Ray(시스터 레이)'를 샘플링한 곡 형식에 얹었다. 'Roadrunner'는 'Sister Ray'의 G, F, C 세 코드 대신 주로 D와 A 두 개의 코드(E 코드는 짧게 두 번만 사용함)를 사용하지만, 지속적으로 줄기차게 고동치는 리듬은 공유한다.

'Roadrunner'는 1977년 UK 싱글 차트에서 11위에 올랐다. UK 펑크 롹 밴드 섹스 피스톨즈(Sex Pistols)의 보컬리스트 조니 로튼(Johnny Rotten)은 "모든 음악을 싫어해도 'Roadrunner'만큼은 내가 가장 좋아하는 곡이다. 하지만 나는 대부분의 가사를 잊어버린다."고 말했다. 음악 평론가 그레일 마커스(Greil Marcus)는 이 노래를 "세상에 존재하는 가장 마법 같은 노래 중 하나"라고 평했다. 롤링 스톤(Rolling Stone)은 이 곡을 2004년 역대 가장 위대한 노래 500곡 목록에서 269위, 2021년에는 77위로 선정했다.
