1954년 초 어틀랜틱 레코드(Atlantic Records)의 아흐멧 에르테군(Ahmet Ertegun)은 제시 스톤에게 2차 세계 대전 전 캔자스 시티에서 음악 경력을 시작한 블루스 샤우터 빅 조 터너를 위해 템포가 빠른 블루스를 쓰라고 제안했다. 스톤은 'shake, rattle and roll'을 생각해내기 전에 다양한 구절을 가지고 시험 연주를 해보았다.

'Shake, Rattle and Roll' 구절은 이전 노래에서도 사용되었다. 1910년 보드빌(노래, 춤, 곡예, 촌극 등 버라이어티) 공연자 베이비 프랭클린 실즈(Baby Franklin Seals)는 주사위로 도박하는 것에 대한 래그타임(ragtime, 빠른 박자로 싱코페이션을 많이 사용한 곡, 재즈 음악의 일종) 곡인 'You Got to Shake, Rattle and Roll'을 뉴올리언스에서 출판했다. 1919년 보드빌 가수 알 버나드(Al Bernard)는 이 노래를 녹음했다.

터너는 1954년 2월 15일 뉴욕에서 'Shake, Rattle and Roll'을 녹음했다. 팝 칼럼니스트 로버트 다이머리(Robert Dimery)는 "캔자스시티의 베테랑 재즈 뮤지션 제시 스톤이 작곡한 'Shake, Rattle and Roll'의 원기왕성한 리듬은 터너의 보컬로 하여금 정욕의 환희를 담아 자신의 연인을 찬양할 수 있게 했다."고 평했다. 

 

애틀랜틱은 터너 버전을 1954년 4월 싱글로 발매했고, US 빌보드 R&B 차트에서 1위, 빌보드 싱글 차트에서 22위를 기록했다. 터너 버전은 롤링 스톤 매거진의 역사상 가장 위대한 노래 500곡 목록에서 127위를 차지했다.
